Applications are now open (FT 1 yr. and PT 2yrs.) for Ireland’s longest running children’s lit. masters with classes beginning in September 2025. DCU’s School of English is proud of the ground-breaking history in initiating the academic study of children’s and YA literature as a postgraduate discipline in Ireland, and we have been kickstarting and developing careers in research, publishing and teaching for almost 30 years!
Students take six taught modules covering key genres and forms from fiction and its many subcategories (including realism, fantasy and others) to poetry, to visual texts in print, such as picturebooks, or visual texts in multimedia, such as film. Students also produce a minor thesis allowing them to develop individual research interests.
Professor Peter Hunt is Adjunct Professor to the programme and we regularly collaborate with national and international organisations, academics and writers. In the past, we have attracted international scholars, such as Prof Raffaella Baccolini, Dr Roberta Penerzoli, Prof Kenneth Kidd, Prof Karen Coats, Prof Jerry Griswold, Dr Marah Gubar, Dr Lucy Pearson, Prof Maria Tatar, and Prof Jack Zipes, as well as leading writers for children and young adults, such as Ireland’s first Laureate na nÓg, Siobhán Parkinson, Dave Rudden, Deirdre Sullivan, Sarah Maria Griffin, and English writer Melvin Burgess.
Students benefit from accessible archives and special collections of award-winning children’s and YA texts, such as the Children’s Books Ireland collection. Lectures take place in DCU’s All Hallows campus, which is very close to Dublin’s vibrant city centre and coastline.
Many of the graduates have gone on to have successful careers in publishing, editing, media, teaching, and the arts; some are now published authors; while others have pursued careers in academia.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the programme is full or until the following dates:
- Closing date for non EU applicants is 1st July 2025
- Closing date for EU applicants is 30th August 2025
